⚾Low back tightness in baseball?⚾ . College pitcher came in with low back tightness while pitching (and golfing) and hip tightness while lifting. . Using the @onbaseu Lunge w/Extension test we were quickly able to spot the movement deficit. Further a
⚾Low back tightness in baseball?⚾ . College pitcher came in with low back tightness while pitching (and golfing) and hip tightness while lifting. . Using the @onbaseu Lunge w/Extension test we were quickly able to spot the movement deficit. Further assessment would show significant abdominal and hip/pelvic myofascial restrictions. . After 1 treatment he reported significant increase in low back comfort. After our second visit he had little to no discomfort in this position and clearly opened up room to move.

We also treated them to @chipotle catering which is a great way to finish almost 14 matches!

1000 miles later! . Over the last week I spent some time at @panther_athletics Strength and Conditioning/Sports Medicine program to learn a little from Jed Smith and his program. As medical providers we can forget the big picture of what athlete's need and what their daily lives look like. . From there, drove down to St. Louis area (weather was pending but no worries) and had an incredible opportunity to meet with and listen to some leaders in baseball Strength and Conditioning, Sports Medicine, Surgeons, and motor learning. The topic was #pitching and how the team can help propel us all to their best benefit.

One athlete even mentioned his struggles with #lowbackpain lead to an eventual fracture of his L5 vertebrae. We weren't surprised to see his hip mobility was lacking. . #painfreeperformance

🚨Youth Sports and Injury🚨 . A 2019 article entitled Orthopedic Injury Profiles in Adolescent Elite Athlete's: A Retrospective Analysis From a Sports Medicine Department, identifies the most common trends in youth sports. . 1. Females (60%) and athlete's of the older age group (15-17) had higher proportions of injury-events than males and younger athlete's (11-14). . 2. Most frequent injuries came from overuse (80.5%) and affected the lower extremity (74.5%) followed by the spine (30.5%). . 3. The top 3 diagnoses were segmental hypomobility (30.5%) (lack of range of motion in joint or movement), tendonopathy (21%), and non-traumatic muscle stiffness (13%). . What can be done? . To help athlete's prevent injuries, they should be completely evaluated for some of those overuse implications. There should be an emphasis on proper movement patterns when loading (and please get them loading or weight lifting). There should be a significant effort on sleep and nutrition as well.

SOFTBALL PITCHERS & UPPER EXTREMITY PAIN . New Research from JSAMS 10/2019. . In 53 Div. 1 softball pitchers 30 were pain-free and 23 in pain. . Tests showed significantly greater throwing side hip external (ER) range of motion (ROM), throwing side hip internal (IR) Isometric strength (ISO), glove side hip ER ISO, throwing side ER ISO, glove side shoulder IR & ER ISO in the pain free group versus the pain group. .
